Day 35 Katherine 22/6/12

After breakfast we left Douglas Hot Springs and drove to Katherine. It wasn’t a very long drive, we drove straight there. There are lots of road trains on the road, we saw a few on the way. Road trains are very big trucks, sometimes four trailers long! When we got there and set up we got ready to go for a drive into town. We all got into the car and Dad said, ‘where’s the keys?’
They were in the locked caravan. When we went to try and unlock it we couldn’t! The key just wouldn’t go in far enough, therefore could not turn! Tess and I climbed in through the tunnel boot below Mum and Dad’s bed to get into the caravan and try to unlock it from the inside, but we couldn’t. Dad tried to spray some stuff into the key hole but that was no use either. We ended up having to call a locksmith! He came and fixed it for us, by putting some graphite powder into the lock, and using a mallet to tap the key further into the lock, thankfully. We think it was due to all the dust from the dirt roads we’ve been on. Once it was fixed we went into town and looked in some shops, then planned what we would do tomorrow. When we got back we had a little rest and read.
For dinner we had Kelly pasta, yum!

  1. Oh dear. I was expecting you to say “…it could have been worse”! Do you realise that Castlemaine doesnt even have a propper locksmith? You were lucky to get one up there I imagine!

    • Good point! We were especially lucky because when we got there to pay there was a big sign on the gate saying: WE DO NOT DO WORK ON CARAVANS OR MOTOR HOMES, SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE. We didn’t know this because we rang on the telephone!

  2. We just love your blog s much and can’t wait to read about the continuing adventures of the Kelly Gang! You must have breathed a sigh of relief when you found a locksmith!
Wonderful photos as always. We have almost an identical one of us in the pool at Gunlom. We haven’t been to Douglas H S so it was interesting to read about your time there.

You must be so in the swing of life on the road with the Jayco behind. Can you imagine freezing in Victoria as we all are? well, that is when we put our noses out the door.

Where to next we wonder? We’ll certainly stay tuned. Thanks for your great post card and we miss you a lot. All being well with George we’ll be leaving for Qld several days after you get back. There will be so much to talk about at the dinner table!! lol

    • We are looking forward to seeing you too before you head off up to Queensland! We are stopping at Threes Ways next, heading towards Lawn Hill. We’ve decided to spend more time in NT and QLD, so we’ll skip through NSW. It was cold today, only 26 degrees! I think we are getting a bit used to this warm weather, we are in for a shock when we get home!

  3. Day 35 was very interesting again, u were very lucky to get a Lock Smith and yes the Road Trains r very big aren’t they but the drivers r usually really nice and ready to help if u r in trouble, I used to wave to them as we passed on the Outback roads. What happened to the blog for day 36? there is just the heading and no info. You r all going to freeze when u get home, we will be lucky if we reach 11deg today, miss you all heaps Bella to.LoL Nan/Mum and Bella xxxxx
